I m old enough to remember when Kylie Minogue was just a soap actress and her younger sister Dannii lookedlikely to be the one who would have a singing career So Simon Sheridan s The Complete Kylie was going to be a trip down memory lane as much as it was something to read on the train, particularly as I was a teenager when Kylie first started making records and am farfamiliar with her earlier musical and acting appearances than I am of herrecent ones, the Doctor Who Chris I m old enough to remember when Kylie Minogue was just a soap actress and her younger sister Dannii lookedlikely to be the one who would have a singing career So Simon Sheridan s The Complete Kylie was going to be a trip down memory lane as much as it was something to read on the train, particularly as I was a teenager when Kylie first started making records and am farfamiliar with her earlier musical and acting appearances than I am of herrecent ones, the Doctor Who Christmas Special she did apart. This 2008 version of The Complete Kylie is a run through of her entire career, both in acting and singing It covers every single and album she had released in the UK and Australia, from the first Australian release of The Loco Motion in 1987 through to the May 2008 release of the single In My Arms from her X album It also covers her acting career, from a bit part in Skyways as a pre teen, though to her appearance in the aforementioned Doctor Who Christmas Special in 2008, via every guest appearance and the long running role as Charlene in Neighbours , which is what first made her famous in both hemispheres before she ever saw a recording studio.Simon Sheridan has certainly done a very thorough job here It appears that he has tracked down and watched or listened to Kylie s entire output over the years Every moment of Kylie s career has been listed and commented upon, effectively in the form of a quick review Sheridan s style makes it feel as if he s mostly giving his own opinion, although he does also include comments from the critics where these are relevant and has also included some of Kylie s own thoughts on her output, taken from whatever interviews she may have been doing at the relevant time. This is one of the main problems with the book it has seemingly been put together without the output of Kylie herself, or anyone closely associated with her This causes a couple of major gaps in the book, in that firstly we only get the views of the author directly and everyone else s come second hand and he s not had the option to ask questions in hindsight, as to whether Kylie would have done things differently had she known how they would turn out, particularly in the case of her acting career, where with Bio Dome and Street Fighter , she was in a couple of really awful films There is also the fact that this book contains only her professional career and only mentions her personal life in passing, which would have added a bitdepth to the book, particularly as all the factual information here does get very dry reading after a while. One of the other issues I had with the book is that Sheridan is clearly a huge Kylie fan, but comes across as very blinkered Where parts of Kylie s career have been less than successful, Sheridan always portrays that as someone else s fault She was either working alongside people who made the wrong creative or marketing choices or, as in the case of her early film appearance in The Delinquents , the critics who slammed it were universally wrong Perhaps amusingly, he suggests the critics look at the film again in hindsight, which he is unable to do himself without access to those directly involved.Ultimately, the book is a very repetitive read It moves from film to single to album to live tour, but doesn t vary in its approach in any way There are release details, a description and some opinion and that approach is the same for each item The lengths of each section may vary and there may befrom the critics and the odd quote from Kylie in the 1980s sections, almost exclusively from Smash Hits , but the approach remains consistent and becomes quite dull and repetitive by the end of the book, especially over the course of nearly a hundred separate entries. If the quality of the book isn t enough to not bother with it, the age certainly should be It s currently 8 years old and is three albums, six tours and five acting appearances behind at this point There was an updated version released in 2012 for the 25th Anniversary of her first musical releases, but even this is four years and multiple releases out of date and I suspect won t offer muchin terms of information or presentation than isn t present here For either 2.79 or 4.86 including postage depending on which version you choose a second hand copy of from theMarketplace, the book s limitations make it not worth a purchase, as if you re a big enough Kylie fan to want to read what is essentially an extended curriculum vita, you ve probably already heard and formed your own opinions of her releases and don t need to read someone else s

This book charts Kylie Minogue s career by detailing her major records films tours books I found this book to be quite interesting I didn t really get any insight into the performer but the details of her work and snippets about her life were fascinating.
