    I love this novel about Opalena, a young woman who lived around the turn of the twentieth century She was discovered as a little girl, alone down a mine, with no clues to her identity A kindly couple, Harry and Beatrice Kinnear, have raised her, and she loves them Their history together includes how she got her unusual Christian name Opalena grows up to be junior reporter for a ladies magazine, interviewing such celebrities as Banjo Paterson, and I shared her excitement It s great when his I love this novel about Opalena, a young woman who lived around the turn of the twentieth century She was discovered as a little girl, alone down a mine, with no clues to her identity A kindly couple, Harry and Beatrice Kinnear, have raised her, and she loves them Their history together includes how she got her unusual Christian name Opalena grows up to be junior reporter for a ladies magazine, interviewing such celebrities as Banjo Paterson, and I shared her excitement It s great when historical happenings feel contemporary as we read.She gets the chance to delve into her own past and learnabout her roots, including being reunited with her maternal grandmother.I found her love triangle very interesting There are two contenders for Opalena s heart Matthew, an earnest but poor young minister, and David, a deep and talented Jewish musician In many stories, it s fairly clear from the outset who the heroine will choose, but not this one We love both young men, and hate to think of either being disappointed I ended up relieved with her final choice, and realised that he did have a slight edge in my heart after all The story covers a lot of that era of Australian history, including a brush with bushrangers I lent this book to my mother, who enjoyed it too
