    I read a short version of this romance many years ago in a book of myths and legends It enchanted me so much that I always wanted to read the full version of this French classic When I saw this English version on I had to snag it up It is a strange printing by the date it is a print on demand book It does not have much in the way of acknowledgements, preface or introduction The letters are large and the printed pages look rather poor This is obviously a public domain book put into print because there is no downloadable version that would cost nothing The original translator lived, I think, in the 16th century, and this updated version was done by Steele in the 1800s So I m not sure exactly what Steele did did he leave the original translation mainly intact, or give us a retelling Did he abridge it or not But regardless, the story reads well and has a classic Victorian feel about it Huon is the hero of the story, who s father was a great Duke His land was Bordeaux, and his overlord was none other than Emperor Charlemagne Like in other stories about the great heroes, or paladins of Charlemagne, the emperor is a bit of a dick He lets his head get clouded by emotions and bad counsel After Huon accidentally kills the emperor s son, who like his father was also somewhat of a dick, he is given a suicide mission to clear his name He must go to Babylon, kiss the admiral s daughter, demand outrageous tribute, and bring back to the emperor the admiral s beard and 4 of his biggest ...
