The master thief Monsieur has a list of priceless objects belonging to the evil organisation, FINIS He proposes a race to Bandette whoever manages to nab the most items on the list will be the greatest thief in the world with the added bonus of striking a blow against FINIS and its leader Absinthe But Absinthe has hired a dangerous new henchman to stop Bandette Il Tredici, aka The Strangler And so begins The Great Thieving Race While I didn t love this second volume as much as the firs The master thief Monsieur has a list of priceless objects belonging to the evil organisation, FINIS He proposes a race to Bandette whoever manages to nab the most items on the list will be the greatest thief in the world with the added bonus of striking a blow against FINIS and its leader Absinthe But Absinthe has hired a dangerous new henchman to stop Bandette Il Tredici, aka The Strangler And so begins The Great Thieving Race While I didn t love this second volume as much as the first, Bandette, Volume 2 Stealers, Keepers is still really good fun Colleen Coover s painted art is so completely seductive and Paul Tobin writes Bandette in such an adorable way that the comic won me over again effortlessly It certainly helped that I read this after being worn out going through several grim overly serious and definitely not enjoyable superhero comics This volume is only four issues long lots of extras at the end add to the page count so we don t spend as much time with Bandette s extended cast of the Urchins, Pimento I love Pimento , Inspector Belgique and Heloise, Daniel and the ballerinas, and as such there are fewer digressions in the plot It s a tighter read though in Bandette s case that s not necessarily a good thing as the looseness added to the free flowing charm of the series Also, the story feels a little too familiar to the first book s The Strangler is the only new addition to Bandette s world Otherwise, it s still Bandette and Monsieur stealing stuff and going after FINIS, Absinthe looking menacing, Belgique is still comically ineffective, Bandette and Daniel continue to court, and even a certain character makes a surprise return It s the second story arc and yet it feels much like the post script of the first, if not a weaker facsimile If Tobin Coover keep Bandette in Paris, it s going to be a very repetitive series with a lot of the same beats reappearing like a sitcom.Despite my criticisms, I really enjoyed the book It s silly and delightful, imaginative and cute, and Bandette s antics are too lovable not to bewitch Coover s art helps a lot with her expressive characters and unapologetically Francophile influenced style though Tobin s breezy dialogue has a lot to recommend it too It isn t the overwhelming burst of fresh air that the first book was but Bandette nonetheless continues to be an irresistibly brilliant all ages comic

Tobin nails it in this second volume Stealers Keepers is a fantastic follow up to Presto and in my opinion, is far superior than the first volume I found the story line much stronger, the baddies Absinthe and the nightmarish strangler that is Il Tredici muchterrifying and the action cranked up to new heights I loved the camp dialogue, the whole feel to it and Bandette in general she is a wonderful creation, a fun loving criminal who also aids the chain smoking Inspector Belgique Tobin nails it in this second volume Stealers Keepers is a fantastic follow up to Presto and in my opinion, is far superior than the first volume I found the story line much stronger, the baddies Absinthe and the nightmarish strangler that is Il Tredici muchterrifying and the action cranked up to new heights I loved the camp dialogue, the whole feel to it and Bandette in general she is a wonderful creation, a fun loving criminal who also aids the chain smoking Inspector Belgique I defy anyone to read this graphic novel and not get swept up in its caped crusader shenanigans Reading Stealers Keepers left me feeling euphoric I feel like I can take on the world now Okay, maybe not the world but definitely Absinthe and Il Tredici dons eye mask and cape Presto

Full disclosure I read this right after I read Josh Simmons s disgusting post apocalyptic horror porn and was in a bad mood from it So you would think a light hearted French bob cut girl bandit no bandette would cure me of this ills, but no, if that was too sour, this was too saccharine Colleen Coover s kicky 60 s drawing color and style will be fun for many, I am sure, but I thought the art was better than Tobin s stories and dialogue, sorry.I guess if I were not so grumpy I would credit Full disclosure I read this right after I read Josh Simmons s disgusting post apocalyptic horror porn and was in a bad mood from it So you would think a light hearted French bob cut girl bandit no bandette would cure me of this ills, but no, if that was too sour, this was too saccharine Colleen Coover s kicky 60 s drawing color and style will be fun for many, I am sure, but I thought the art was better than Tobin s stories and dialogue, sorry.I guess if I were not so grumpy I would credit some of the extras of this volume that I appreciated as additions design conception influences Coover has in mind Audrey Hepburn and Audrey Tatou for Bandette, natch Cary Grant, Peter O Toole, Herbert Lom, that kinda thing from the Golden era some short stories written by Tobin that are just okay, and not as well drawn by other artists , a list of what Bandette has stolen thus far and illustrated story not a comics story by Tobin and Coover They re all about the French film fantasy Paris and that comes through Maybe a 2.5 for me, overall

Bandette returns There is something so silly and charming about Bandette And so much wordplay As a side note, I love when comics have a lot of supplemental materials In addition to the comic, this has a series of Bandette s Urchin Stories, a short story about Margot, influences for the character design, a piece about how it was written, and a little piece about all the stuff Bandette has stolen I eat that stuff up.

  10. Chad Chad says:

Full of 6o s kitsch, Bandette is clearly inspired by Audrey Hepburn The story picks up directly from volume 1 as Absinthe sends out another hitman, The Strangler, to kill Bandette At the same time, Bandette is competing with Monsieur to see who is the better thief The art in these books is sooo good and the story so much fun Every comic should strive to be as good as this.
