First off, in the interest of full disclosure, I was the content editor for this novel and I ve been friends with the author for years That said, I m an avid reader, so that s the hat I m wearing for this review, but I understand if you don t take this as wholly unbiased Also, I will try to avoid spoilers as best I can The first time I read the rough draft for Academia Draconia, I was enchanted To me, it was Harry Potter meets How to Train Your Dragon I confess here that I pushed for First off, in the interest of full disclosure, I was the content editor for this novel and I ve been friends with the author for years That said, I m an avid reader, so that s the hat I m wearing for this review, but I understand if you don t take this as wholly unbiased Also, I will try to avoid spoilers as best I can The first time I read the rough draft for Academia Draconia, I was enchanted To me, it was Harry Potter meets How to Train Your Dragon I confess here that I pushed fordragons in every critique I gave Ms McKinnon There were already plenty but as a fantasy and dragon lover, there s always room fordragons and for those similarly inclined You re welcome I will tell any and all readers right now that this is a world worth exploring, but you won t get every last detail out of this one book McKinnon sets her stories in different times but in the same universe so, while it is well fleshed out and suits this novel, be prepared to have some curiosities go unanswered for now Academia Draconia is set in a world that s both new and feels old There arestories here to be sure. That said, following the protagonist Gaile through her mis adventures at the DragonCorps Academy had me pleasantly enthralled though occasionally also face palming with exasperation I didn t think I d ever read a characterstubborn than I am She s what I d call an unreliable narrator, so, while it s her story that you re following, I often wondered if her experiences were really as bad as she thought it was The plot has a lot of smaller ups and downs as Gaile adjusts to read groans about each new challenge, until a spectacular final conflict that had me at the edge of my seat There are definitely a few scenes that made my heart stop too but I really don t want to spoil anything Overall, characters are the high point, in my opinion Like the world, there s a lot of depth to them without any pandering to the audience They have quirks that might get on your nerves but then, a chapter later, have endearing moments that ll melt your heart Of course, reading about a character I don t completely adore has always proved to be ain depth and rewarding experience to me and makes those endearing moments all the better. The dragons are spared no expense either They are, in this world, able to shapeshift into human form and are thinking, feeling creatures Without spoiling anything, I ll say the dragon characters are a big reason I adored this book and why I ve read itthan once All of that praise being said, I wouldn t go into this book if you re looking for a romantic subplot or murder mystery there are hints of feelings and certainly mysteries to solve, but this is a science fantasy novel through and through If you re looking for a whimsical adventure in a new world of dragons, this isfor you.I m also super fickle about self published works There s sometimes an urgency to publish that mars the design and overall readability of a novel, but this isn t the case here The cover art by Juliane V lker is stunning and wraps around the trade paperback edition perfectly The printing has legible font and proper margins so there s no crowded feeling that ll tire out your eyes.My only major issue is that I didn t get the chance to copy edit this book there are wee grammatical quirks here and there I notice off place commas I m not sorry for that, ha as well as the occasional odd sentence. As far as I m concerned, none of that detracts from the experience of a satisfying fantasy story about dragons and the riders who try desperately not to fall off of them and mostly succeed
